Happiness and the Nurtured Entrepreneur
Dear Nurtured Entrepreneur,
I have a question for you to consider that might set off a dizzying domino-effect of brilliant ideas.
“What changes could I make in my entrepreneurial business life so that after they were made I could say to the people who love me, ‘I have never been happier in my life’?”
This question first surfaced when a friend told me a story about an executive who left her job, blackberry, multiple cell phones, and life as she’d known it to join a Buddhist community she’d been visiting for several years. This woman’s comment when interviewed was, ‘I’ve never been happier in my life.’
Most of you Nurtured Entrepreneurs made a parallel change in your work lives by leaving corporate employment and starting your own work-with-passion business. Where can you make changes that will add to your happiness and work satisfaction? I’ll give you a hint:
- Think about your day-to-day business dealings: working on projects, talking to clients, marketing, developing products, writing a blog.
- How do you know when you’re happy?
- What signals you that you’re in the zone?
- Write down what you’re doing when your happy signals show up. These are the activities and circumstances that you want to increase so that your creative entrepreneurship can flourish and your spirit thrive.
When I am really and truly happy in my entrepreneurial business, I find myself whistling a specific little tune. I don’t recognize it as a known melody so I don’t know where it came from, but it has been with me for many years and only pops up in the presence of true happiness. It comes from a place deep within when I am doing work that feels worthwhile and I know I am making a positive difference in my clients’ lives.
“The greatest gift that you could ever give to another is your own happiness, for when you are in a state of joy, happiness, or appreciation, you are fully connected to the stream of pure, positive Source Energy that is truly who you are.”
Take a look and love yourself enough to ponder these questions. See how you can UP the happiness in your work-with-passion business by adding more of the work activities (and kinds of clients) that nurture you. After all, you started your company with a vision that made your heart sing. Is it still singing?
Until next time …

Introvert Entrepreneur, Introvert Coach? Last weekend, I attended a 3-day event for spiritual entrepreneurs. Great energy and very grounded. Outstanding key note speaker (Colin Tipping, author of Radical Forgiveness – what’s not to love?), well planned break-out sessions with presenters who were generous with their information. There was an excellent session called ‘Successful Introvert Entrepreneur.’…

Spring Cleaning Make-Overs for Solopreneurs Have you been seized yet by the unstoppable urge to clean, clear out, rearrange, and make-over? I went into my guest room to dust and polish a neglected bed frame. This required standing the mattress and box spring up against the wall. That done, I found my eyes roaming around…

Kick It Up a Notch One of the most challenging dilemmas for experts is evaluating their own products and classes from the viewpoint of their audience. It’s hard to remember what it’s like to not know something when you’re an expert. I find this is no less true for work-with-passion solopreneurs than it is for…

Helping Solopreneurs Shine Through a Bio Make-Over Yesterday I was thinking about solopreneurs of a seasonal kind: Santa Clauses. Looking at childhood photos of my siblings and me perched on the laps of unknown men disguised as St. Nick, made me wonder about these individuals featured in treasured family photographs, gazed at year after year,…

Tending Your Focus in the Garden of Entrepreneurship Gardening is such an apt analogy for life and no less applicable to the life of the small business owner and conscious entrepreneur, for we surely reap what we sow in our work-with-passion soil. And in the Garden of Entrepreneurship, we sometimes lose track of knowing that…

Dear Nurtured Entrepreneur, We’ve entered the time of year in the northern hemisphere (mid-September to mid-December) with the shortest days and longest nights. Traditionally a time of more inward-turning activities, I’ve been thinking about where you and I could turn our attention to deepen the nurturing of our entrepreneurial selves. Skipping over any yucky…

Dear Nurtured Entrepreneur, “It’s a process” is one of the favorite sayings of an entrepreneurial friend of mine. What she means is the process of learning how to be a nurtured entrepreneur instead of an undernourished one. Recently, she gracefully gave notice to a client she’d been working with for a couple of years.…

Dear Nurtured Entrepreneur, As a self-nurturing entrepreneur, I buy flowers for my home every couple of weeks. I love looking at and admiring them. “Just look at you beauties!” I’ll exclaim after arranging them in a vase. What is beautiful to you and how does it nurture you? Maybe you have an arrangement of…
